There is no universal tool-clearance dimension for an SMT nut. Review the actual screw head, driver or socket shape through approach, rotation and withdrawal, including locating variation. Component clearance checks do not automatically validate a tool that is absent from the model.
Add the tool to the assembly review
Altium describes clearance checking using component models and boundaries. Autodesk describes interference analysis between selected bodies or components. These capabilities support a review that explicitly includes a separate tool envelope rather than only the nut's PCB land pattern.
Obtain the working tip, wider shaft and socket geometry, together with the screw head and bracket. The height at which a tool becomes wider matters. A thin centerline does not represent its physical envelope.
| Object | Review | Units |
|---|---|---|
| Screw and bracket | Head, bearing face and assembly pose | mm, degrees |
| Tool body | Profile at different heights | mm |
| Approach and withdrawal | Obstructions along the path | Displacement and pose |
| Locating envelope | Board, nut and fixture variation | mm with defined datums |
One cross-section is not the whole path
Assume one horizontal section contains a 5.0 mm diameter cylindrical tool, with its axis 3.2 mm from the closest neighboring face. Nominal radial clearance is 3.2−2.5=0.7 mm. This excludes tilt, runout and dimensional or locating variation. It is not a recommended safety margin.
At another height the shaft or socket may be wider. Review the actual motion range and verify operator access for manual assembly. For automation, have the equipment supplier confirm permissible offsets and the motion program; this article approves no robot trajectory.
Include the final assembly state
Check access after brackets, housing and wiring are installed, and distinguish initial assembly from service removal. Use an approved physical trial to validate the modeled result. Missing components and incorrect revisions can defeat a collision check.
For SMT nuts and SMD nuts, provide lands, bracket geometry, tools and surrounding space. Review screw length and engagement separately from tool reach and tightening requirements.
Questions
Does a clean component DRC establish access? Confirm tools, housing and paths were actually included.
Can the nut OD define every keepout? The tool or screw head may be larger.
